Used for centuries by merchants as a measuring cup for rice, the hand beaten brass Mana candle holder is made by brassware artisans in Nepal’s ancient town of Bhaktapur and is one of Nepal’s oldest and most famous crafting traditions.
Hand poured by the affectionately known ‘candle lady’ of Kathmandu, Sita pours her exquisite blend of Himalayan beeswax, scented with citronella essential oils by hand, sharing her unique crafting knowledge with every lit wick.
Growing up, Sita didn’t go to school, so when she got married she learnt candle making at the Nepalese Business Service Centre and started her candle making business to help support her family. Starting from $50 from a local NGO, not only does Sita rent her own studio, she now supplies candles to people all over her neighbourhood and hosts her own candle making classes for other women in her community; inspiring other members of her family to pursue their dreams.
